Solicitar presupuestoFour failure modes of traditional model-making
Hand-craft, CNC-foam, laser-cut and outsourced model-making each carry recurring cost and risk centres for architectural studios.
60 to 200 hours
Man-hour-dominated hand-cutting
Foam-core, basswood and cardboard assembly absorbs 60 to 200 model-shop hours per review round, a hidden charge against project margin.[6]
Ra 0.8 to 3 um
CNC-foam chatter on complex geometry
Milled-foam surfaces carry chatter and tool-mark texture; ISO 4287 reference places SLA top-face Ra at 0.8 to 3 micrometres, an advantage CNC foam reaches only after filler and sanding.[7]
2 m tile-free
Laser-cut tiling limit
Above about 1 metre, laser-cut stacks show seams and colour mismatch. Scale Models UK runs full-colour ColorJet urban models up to 2 metres tile-free.[8]
EUR 5k to 30k
Outsourced model shop cost
Specialist model shops price presentation models between EUR 5,000 and EUR 30,000 per project, and competition schedules rarely support two outsourced rounds.[9]
3D printing versus alternatives
Comparison dated 2026-04-19, drawing on published vendor figures and industry analyses, alternatives are hand-craft foam and basswood, CNC-foam milling, laser-cut tiled stock and outsourced model shops.

Limits and edge cases
Site models above 2 to 3 metres still require paneling because single-print build volumes cap around 300 to 500 millimetres per axis. Even the 2 metre ColorJet outputs at Scale Models are multi-print assemblies. Registration features help but seam management remains.
Standard photopolymer resins yellow and embrittle under sustained UV, a problem for permanent lobby displays. Scale accuracy below 1:500 is bounded by XY pixel pitch and minimum-wall constraints: at 1:1000 a 3 metre street becomes 3 millimetres, within resolution for the street but below reliable wall thickness, forcing representational modelling.
MABS 3D perspective
MABS 3D (2026-04-19) offers architectural-model production across three process families: FDM for massing and site context, MSLA and SLA for detailed presentation, large-format resin for single-piece facade and city-block studies. Files in, priced quote out, 3 to 10 day turnaround. Materials include PLA in a range of colours, white and grey photopolymer for presentation, translucent resins for lighting studies. MABS 3D handles support removal, wash, cure and optional primer, returning parts ready for assembly onto the studio's base. Pricing is transparent and volume-linear, with no tooling charge.

Preguntas frecuentes
Can we get full-colour planning models?
Yes, via ColorJet Printing on 3D Systems ProJet hardware, which integrates graphic colour coding directly into the gypsum composite. Scale Models UK and NYU LaGuardia run this class of output for urban planning work up to 2 metres in length.
